The Torbay Sport Partnership and Churston Golf Club staged the final of the Search for a Star programme at Cayman Golf Centre this week.

The evening followed a unique golfing talent search, which involved coaching within schools and providing teachers with support to develop their knowledge and skills.

The aim was to unearth the next Golfing Star through a process of elimination, which spanned 6 weeks.
The final 19 children from schools across the whole of Torbay met at Cayman Golf Centre where Sam Stephens, PGA Golf Pro from Churston Golf Club divided them into groups. After their final instructions to youngsters tackled the course, putting into practise all of the skills and etiquette that they had learned during the previous weeks of tuition.

The players showed tremendous ability, sinking long puts chipping in off the greens and playing the ball straight and true from the tee. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and at the end of their round, following a hotdog or two, the final positions were announced.

Prizes were given out to all of the finalists, including golf balls, free rounds of golf at Cayman and Broadsands pitch & putt and free coaching sessions with Sam Stephens. The top two players also received a half set of Masters Golf Clubs and a FREE junior membership at Churston Golf Club for 1 year.

John Julyan, Partnership Development Manager of the Torbay Sport Partnership addressed the youngsters and parents, thanking all of the supporters of this project, including Churston Golf Club, Cayman Golf and Broadsands pitch & putt, but especially Sam Stephens and Sue Eames (SSCo at Torquay Community College) for organising, coordinating and delivering the programme.

“The project has been a tremendous success and is a testament to the way all partners have played their part to create this wonderful opportunity for our young people. More projects are in the pipeline to inspire children and young people of Torbay to engage in sporting activities at a level that meets their needs.”

The top five players were:

1	James Boothroyd (Warberry)
2	Callum Jobe (Furzeham)
3	Luke Tooley (Chestnut)
4	Katie Leigh (shiphay)
5	Macy Harvey (Ilsham)

Over 75 boys and girls from Year 3&4 took part in the second annual Torbay Sport Partnership’s Racquet Skills Festival at Torquay Tennis Club on Wednesday 14th July.

The festival was designed for children of all abilities to come along and practice different skills and techniques, which they can then use in a variety of sports. The children, from a mixture of schools from across Torbay, were split into small groups; and they moved around a number of different stations, led by young leaders from Westlands School.

At the end of the event each child was given a certificate for participating and each winner from the smaller groups was given a voucher by Torquay Tennis Club. The voucher entitles them to FOUR FREE coaching sessions on a Saturday morning.

Tom Hayne, Torbay Sport Partnership’s Competition Manager said “This is the second time we have run this festival and the number of young children attending has risen dramatically from last year’s festival. We couldn’t run this festival without the support of everyone at Torquay Tennis Club especially Steve Maslen and Kevin Durney; and we are looking forward to next year’s event”.

John Julyan, Partnership Development Manager added, “This is another brilliant example of schools and community sports clubs working effectively together. We are committed to providing more quality opportunities for our young people and would welcome more clubs to come forward and link with the work taking place in schools”.

PLT, Matt Briant organised TCC’s Annual Yr 6 Rounder’s Competition held at Barton Primary School.

Sherwell Valley, Cockington, Torre, Barton and Mayfield were all out to win the Family Trophy.
New comers on the block, Cockington and Sherwell Valley produced some powerful batting and skilful fielding and proved to be tough opposition. So much so, that they came first and second, respectively! . . . . Winners are Grinners!

Will they be invited back next year? I think so, but it will mean that we will have to practice a little harder! . . . . Believe and Achieve!

In the mean time, Mayfield Special School students also enjoyed the day - with very little adaptation: either the ball could be placed on top of a cone and hit or the batsman was allowed to just throw it. They were fantastic!

Four hundred boys and girls — will compete in the day-long Herald Express Luscombe World Cup on June 18.

Twenty schools are taking part in the competition which runs as the real World Cup is being staged in South Africa.

Yesterday a prestigious live draw was held at the Newton Abbot home of Pro-Direct, leading online sports retailer.

Herald Express editor Andy Phelan and Pro-Direct customer support manager Matt Bradshaw paired schools with countries.

They will now represent those countries when they compete on Paignton Community and Sports College's £1.3 million all-weather pitch.

Mr Bradshaw said: "We think this is a fantastic event that the schools will love. We hope that this will encourage the children at this age to take up sport.

"Pro-Direct are always happy to support local sporting events such as this, especially at key grassroots level."

Andy Phelan said he was looking forward to what will be a landmark sporting event.

He added: "It's great to see so many schools keen to be involved.

"We're very grateful to Paignton Community College, the Torbay Sports Partnership and our friends at Pro-Direct, who are all helping us to put on what I'm sure will be a memorable day."

John Julyan, partnership development manager for Torbay Sports Partnership, said: "With World Cup fever gripping the country, we wanted to build on that.

"Sport has the power to inspire young people, so we wanted to harness that during the World Cup year and stage a big event.

"There will be a real festival feel."

The competition will also be in memory of John Luscombe, a former Torbay teacher who died in 1996.
WESTLANDS ARE THE U15 SOUTH DEVON FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS

Westlands' Year 10 Football Team emerged victorious in their cup final showdown with Teignmouth, WINNING 4-1

WESTLANDS SCHOOL 4 – TEIGNMOUTH COMMUNITY COLLEGE 1

Westlands beat their rivals from across the Teign 4-1 with goals from Jack Gatting (2), Ryan Begley, and Connor Conneely.

A one sided first half seemed to see the ‘home’ side spurred on by playing in front of a good sized crowd on a decent playing surface at Plainmoor. Westlands were playing some lovely attacking football, and deservedly took the lead after 20 minutes through Begley’s strike. More good work from Begley down the right saw the ball drop to Eugene Smith in the area, who calmly slotted to Gatting to fire home just before the break.

The orange army of Westlands were shocked in to silence just after the restart, with Sam Simmonds ghosting in unmarked at the far post to head home a right wing cross. A nervous ten minutes followed for Westlands as Teignmouth began to gain control of the game. The defence, lead by Nathan Halton, marshalled this storm well and this gave confidence to the rest of the side who then went on to dominate the rest of the game. With 10 minutes left to play, Gatting was brought down in the area and then duly converted the penalty to make it 3-1.

Conneely capped a fine team performance by placing a Billy Reay pass in to the bottom right hand corner to seal the game for Westlands.

Both Westlands and Teignmouth wish to say thank you to Torquay United for allowing the game to be played at Plainmoor, and in particular to Robbie Herrera for presenting the trophies after the game.
