Learning Leaders Workshop for Secondary PE Teachers

Date: Thursday 29th March 2012

Time: 9.30am – 12.30pm

Venue: St Luke’s College, Exeter

Learning Leaders supports all young people aged 11-14 to enhance their own and others’ learning through developing and applying leadership skills. It has been designed by the Youth Sport Trust to support physical education (PE) and school sport and can also be applied within cross-curricular and wider school and community contexts.

The Learning Leaders resource comprises:

  • a workshop for PE teachers
  • a teacher’s handbook
  • a set of student cards

The Learning Leaders workshop aims to support secondary PE teachers to develop their students’ thinking and learning through leadership. It is a three-hour module, delivered locally by Youth Sport Trust national trainers, and enables teachers (and learning support assistants where appropriate) to explore ideas and share strategies that will lead to improved outcomes for young people. By the end of the workshop, teachers should be able to:

  • identify key leadership skills and recognise how they contribute to young people’s learning and achievement
  • describe what Learning Leaders might look like by the time they are 14
  • describe ways of identifying where learners are at 11, so they can plan for appropriate teaching, learning and progress
  • explain the role of PE in developing Learning Leaders
  • recognise where Learning Leaders sit on the leadership pathway and their opportunities for progression
  • recognise some of the deployment opportunities and national resources available to support Learning Leaders’ development.
