Primary Volleyball Festival - Thursday 23rd October 2003

32 pupils took part in a Primary volleyball coaching festival at Paignton Community & Sports College, as part of an events programme set up by the School Sport Co-ordinator Paula Thomas for this academic year 2003/04.

The children were privileged to have expert volleyball coaching by Ros Sutherland (South West Volleyball DevelopmentOfficer) who taught the

children basic skills in order for them to then partake in a festival.

The pupils were educated during training to referee a game and then transferred this into the festival.

The afternoon was a great success and the pupils gained knowledge and understanding of a growing game that is becoming extremely popular at Paignton Community & Sports College.

Brixham/Churston SSCo Hockey Festival 2003

Torbay Leisure Centre were the host of the first festival of the year for the Brixham/Churston SSCo family on the 17th Oct. 50 Year 5/6 pupils took part in a day of coaching by Nick Jones, England player and Devon coach and we finished with a round robin tournament.

Five schools from the area participated in the day, Eden Park Junior School, Furzeham Primary, Galmpton Primary, Roselands Primary, and White Rock Primary. The points they achieved will go towards the Brixham/Churston annual overall festivals winners plate.

Winners of the tournament, Galmpton Primary School, were strong contenders from the outset, winning one game 5-0. Second spot was a lot closer; Eden Park Junior School won the runners up place by a 1 goal difference against Furzeham Primary.

The day was enjoyed by all and everyone improved their standard of play by the end. My thanks goes to Nick Jones, Kevin Wiltshire (TLC), and Marcus Thompson for their help and support.

Badminton into Schools Initiative

Following the recent badminton training given to teachers at Paignton Community & Sports College, pupils from Collaton St. Mary primary school came up to the new sports hall to have a go themselves.

Having played a number of different games that focused on throwing and catching a shuttlecock, the pupils quickly progressed to using a racket to hit the shuttle over a net and into a target on the other side. Having practised this, they then went on to play in pairs, trying to keep a rally going without missing a shot.

In just a short space of time, the pupils made noticeable progress and certainly had a lot of fun.

Anyone wishing to try teaching badminton in their school, contact your SSCo through this website and we can arrange for someone to come to your school to deliver some sessions and will also undertake teacher training.

Mayfield Special School Awards For All Funding

Congratulations to Mayfield Special School in gaining Awards for All funding. This will be used to introduce and develop bounce therapy and trampolining at the school and to also open trampolining to the community and local schools.

Paignton Community & Sports College Top Link Festival

Four fantastic students from Paignton Community & Sports College organised a very successful multi-sports event for local partner primary schools.

Over One hundred and fifteen children took part in a wide range of activities, each one supervised by a student taking a Junior Sports Leader Award.

Congratulations to all the students, especially the four members of the management team and their teacher, Miss Thomas!

Sporting ICT Project

Brixham Community College's SSCo family have begun piloting a sport and ICT project that is hoped to spread across the bay. The idea behind the project is to use sport as a means of making literacy, numeracy, and ICT realistic and tangible to children. It also demonstrates that sport is not just about being physically active, that children need to use their grey matter as well.

The most recent participants where 15 Year 5 pupils, from Eden Park Junior School. One set of tasks they had to complete was a medley of athletic challenges. After completing each challenge the pupils recorded their results on a record card. The data and information collected was then used to produce a chart of results and written statements on what they did.

As well as benefiting primary pupils the project has also been used by Y10 JSLA students from the college to practice their leadership skills. Six students helped by taking a small group of children and leading them through all the tasks. Their response has been fantastic and they are looking forward to helping out again with Furzeham Primary in June.

Sporting Playgrounds

Primary school playgrounds are set to benefit from a new £10 million pound Government programme designed to give Playground facilities a makeover.

Sporting playgrounds will target a minimum of 470 schools in 27 local education authority areas. The Youth Sports Trust is acting as consultants for the programme.

Huff and Puff

Huff and Puff is a fantastic idea providing structured lunchtime physical activity for children. Sports equipment is made available to children and Lunchtime Supervisors are given training in how to lead small games activities. The system uses an ingenious way or controlling the distribution of equipment, ensuring that very little gets lost! The whole package, including equipment, LTS training and storage can be accessed using an Awards for All Grant.

Awards for ALL

Awards for All is a simple and fast way to get money for sports programmes in your school. Between £500 and £5000 is available for your school to develop school/club links and your extra-curricular (out of hours) sports provision.

Step Into Sport

This two year project is an innovative partnership between the British Sports Trust, the Youth Sports Trust and Sport England. It aims to increase the number of Sports leaders and help to develop the next generation of sports coaches, trainers and officials.

It is partcularly useful for people involved in Sports clubs, Youth Leaders, or anyone who just wants to develop their leadership skills.

It provides a great opportunity for young people and adults to become leaders and provides a clear pathway for volunteering.

Devon Active Sports

A full programme of Sports activities is being organised through the Torbay Sport Partnership and the Sports Development Officer by Devon Active Sports. These include: Netball taster days Hockey sessions (dates TBA), basketball (coaching will begin at Churston Grammar School on Monday 27th Jan ) Girls Football at Torquay Community College…..and many more.

Volleyball Report

For the past two Tuesday evenings, teachers from some of the Primary schools in Torbay have been having taster sessions in Volleyball. Ros Sutherland, the English Volleyball Development officer, ran two excellent sessions, each two and half hours long. Teachers learnt how to begin to develop volleyball at Primary level, with many of the skills learnt suitable for use across a wide range of sports. Volleyball fits neatly into the Net/Wall strand of the KS2 PE curriculum.

Raleigh Get Set Cycling

One wet Saturday morning last week, pupils from Foxhole Juniors and Collaton St. Mary Primary school attended a cycling taster session at Paignton Community & Sports College, Waterleat Road. The event was organised through the Torbay sports Partnership by British Cycling Association. Although only a few children attended, it was thoroughly enjoyable and similar sessions are planned for next year.
