The First Primary School Indoor Athletics Festival!
Indoor athletics is designed to be fun and encourages children to learn through play. The purpose of the festival was to help young children develop essential motor skills, measure their own performance, build team spirit, channel children's natural energy into positive activity and provide the first steps into athletics for future champions!
The children worked extremely hard in completing six field events which included a standing long jump and speed bounce test.
They then went on to take part in a variety of track events which included a sprinting, hurdling and an obstacle course.
The children performed to the best of their ability and congratulations to the overall champions, Collaton St Mary, with a team total of 35 points.
Runners up were Foxhole Juniors with a total of 32 points.
Tony Callcut, Torbay Sport Partnership Development Manager observed and commented, "It was fantastic to see so many children actively taking part in this event.
Indoor athletics events will be running across the bay over the next term, with a final sports hall competition planned for February".
The festival was organised through the School Sport Co-ordinator programme and was an enjoyable event for all.
A big thank you to staff and parents from the primary schools who organised their pupils to attend the festival.

Cycling in Style
On Friday 3rd December, sixteen students from Paignton Community and Sports College, Brixham Community College and Churston Ferrers grammar School experienced the thrills and spills of the International Velodrome at Newport, in Wales.
The students, all of whom train and race regularly in mountain biking and cyclo-cross events, were given expert coaching by Richard Shepherd and John Caplin, both from British cycling.
Starting slowly, the students took only a short time to get used to the bikes which have no brakes or gears, before they gained in confidence and began to climb higher up the track.
On the Sunday 5th December, the same group entered the Soggy Bottom Mountain Bike race at Newnham Park in Plympton. This is a very gruelling technical course, with steep downhill sections, long climbs and fast single track. The students, who were riding for BikinMotion, won the overall team event.
Badminton into schools Initiative
On Monday 11th October, 96 Year 4 pupils attended the first Torbay Primary Schools Badminton Festival at Paignton Community and Sports College.
White Rock,Upton St.James, Curledge Street, Foxhole Juniors and Priory RC, all took part in this exciting event.
During the afternoon, the pupils undertook a whole range of different badminton activities, all of which were designed as part of the Badminton Into Schools Initiative (BISI). The aim was to teach racket skills and help improve co-ordination, as well as introducing pupils to this popular sport.
Junior Sports Leadership students from Paignton Community and Sports College ran each activity under the guidance of badminton coach Sue Jarvis. There were points awarded at each activity, all of which contributed to a final score for each team.
The winning team this year were Year 4 pupils from Upton St.James School.

Torbay Cyclists go from Strength to Strength
On Tuesday 19th October, 3 British Cycling Talent Squad Coaches arrived at Paignton Community and Sports College with 10 specially adapted bikes and turbo-trainers.
Eleven students from Paignton Community and Sports College, two from Torquay Boys Grammar School, three from Westlands School and five from Torquay Community College, were successful in getting through the Stage 1 tests and were therefore selected to undertake these more demanding Stage 2 tests.
Students from Brixham Community College and Churston Ferrers Grammar school will be tested later in the week.
The overall standard is much higher this year and the students have all done extremely well to get to this stage. With luck, one or two may follow in the footsteps of last years successful cyclist Ella Hopkins from Churston, who is now a British Talent Squad member and is sponsored by Persil.
For students who are keen cyclists, there is a cycling club for Yr7, Yr8 and Yr9 students being run at PC & SC each Friday after school on the Waterleat Road site. Students are given coaching, trips off-site are organised and opportunities to enter team races in mountain biking are cyclo-cross are available.

TOP Link Festival
Paignton Community and Sports College recently held their annual TOP Link festival organised by leadership students Laura Baker, Paul McGuire, Jessica Castle, Patrick Evans and Laura Barron. TOP Link is a leadership programme that has been developed by the Youth Sport Trust. It enables young people, aged 14 to 16 years, to develop their leadership skills by planning and organising festivals of sport for their local primary schools.
The five students began planning the festival in September 2003 and on Thursday 27th May; all of their efforts were rewarded through an extremely successful day. As it is an Olympic year (Athens 2004), the theme chosen was a mini-Olympics festival for children aged 6 – 8 years. Four primary schools attended: Collaton St Mary, Foxhole, Oldway and Preston and 150 pupils took part in this prestigious event.
The day began at 9.30am with an opening ceremony and all children were placed into a team of approximately 15 pupils. Each team was then given the name of a country that competes at the Olympic games. The children then participated in seven events: basketball, mini-marathon, tennis, softball, 60m sprint, long jump and shot putt. Following the activities, a closing ceremony and presentation of awards and certificates took place.
There was a superb atmosphere during the day and the children were an absolute credit to their schools. The pupils participated in all of the events with anticipation, enthusiasm and excitement.
Tony Callcut, Partnership Development Manager for the Torbay Sport Partnership said, “The feedback from the primary schools highlighted the achievement of the PC & SC leadership students. Their organisation leading up to the festival and the way they conducted themselves on the day, was outstanding”.
Congratulations go to Oldway Primary School who were the overall winners of the mini-Olympics festival 2004.
Results: 1st place = Oldway Primary School
2nd place = Foxhole Junior School
3rd place = Preston Primary School
4th place = Collaton St Mary C of E Primary School

Jungle club
The exciting new concept in the world of children fitness, which brings together yoga postures and creative fun is sweeping across schools in South Devon.
Teacher trainer Lynn Squire has designed a fitness programme, which brings together yoga postures and creative fun.
Yoga postures mimic the animal and natural world and for thousands of years have been renowned for their calming effects and the huge amount of physical benefits. The principle focus is to develop a strong, supple, healthy body. Improving concentration, clear thinking, self-discipline and awareness of others.
“Anyone can do Freestyle Fitness Yoga” says Lynn “ even children with specific challenges can benefit as every one works in their own way and there is no competition. There are no religious or cultural threats in the sessions, it’s all about children experiencing something new and expanding their possibilities”.
Through the Torbay Sport partnership, many schools have already invited Lynn in to do workshops and after school sessions and she hopes to see well over 1000 children by the end of term!
If you haven’t already booked Jungle Club to visit your school, contact your SSCo at Torbaysport.com or call for details and further information from Lynn on 07816 937 218 (email lynnsquire@msn.com).
Primary Schools Athletics Coaching
Teachers from Torbay primary schools have been receiving top quality athletics coaching.
The course, designed to give practical ideas for Key Stage 1 and 2 teachers, was linked to the Norwich Union Shine Awards.
Different throwing, running and jumping techniques were demonstrated and explained effectively, to assist with teaching the primary athletics curriculum. Mark Hanbury from Hayes Primary School said “ …superb instruction, made simple and easy to understand. I really enjoyed it!”
In fact, the course was so popular, that there is demand for another course to be run in June. If you would like to attend, please contact Tony Callcut (tcallcut@torbaysport.com).
