WESTLANDS ARE THE U15 SOUTH DEVON FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS

Westlands' Year 10 Football Team emerged victorious in their cup final showdown with Teignmouth, WINNING 4-1

WESTLANDS SCHOOL 4 – TEIGNMOUTH COMMUNITY COLLEGE 1

Westlands beat their rivals from across the Teign 4-1 with goals from Jack Gatting (2), Ryan Begley, and Connor Conneely.

A one sided first half seemed to see the ‘home’ side spurred on by playing in front of a good sized crowd on a decent playing surface at Plainmoor. Westlands were playing some lovely attacking football, and deservedly took the lead after 20 minutes through Begley’s strike. More good work from Begley down the right saw the ball drop to Eugene Smith in the area, who calmly slotted to Gatting to fire home just before the break.

The orange army of Westlands were shocked in to silence just after the restart, with Sam Simmonds ghosting in unmarked at the far post to head home a right wing cross. A nervous ten minutes followed for Westlands as Teignmouth began to gain control of the game. The defence, lead by Nathan Halton, marshalled this storm well and this gave confidence to the rest of the side who then went on to dominate the rest of the game. With 10 minutes left to play, Gatting was brought down in the area and then duly converted the penalty to make it 3-1.

Conneely capped a fine team performance by placing a Billy Reay pass in to the bottom right hand corner to seal the game for Westlands.

Both Westlands and Teignmouth wish to say thank you to Torquay United for allowing the game to be played at Plainmoor, and in particular to Robbie Herrera for presenting the trophies after the game.
